Cherelle Griner on conversation with wife Brittney Griner: ‘The most disturbing phone call I’ve ever had’
Cherelle Griner had two very different phone calls with her wife. Britney Griner, since the WNBA star was arrested in Russia for drug possession in February. For the first time she was delighted. “She was so happy just to hear her voice,” Sherrell revealed of her first phone call.She said her wife was safe and she said, “She can get through this.” I thought.
But the second call got her worried. “She could hear that she wasn’t okay. When you think about someone’s suffering, when they suffered the most…she was the biggest that day,” said Sherrell, co-host of “CBS Morning.” told Gayle King.

After the second call, Cherelle said, “I think I cried for two or three days in a row. It was the most disturbing phone call I’ve ever had.”
“I think it’s the quietest moment I’ve ever shared with my wife,” she added.
The WBNA All-Star and Olympic gold medalist was arrested at a Moscow airport in February after an e-cigarette cartridge she prescribed for chronic pain was found to contain less than a gram of hash oil. In August, she was sentenced to nine years in a Russian prison.
“I believe that crimes require punishment,” Sherrell said. “But it has to be balanced.”
“BG is already really suffering beyond her crimes,” she added.
Sherrell hopes there will be a prisoner swap between the U.S. and Russia before the next hearings. reassured the
“He’s doing what he can. But there’s another party to this situation, and it’s also addressing Russia’s need to have mercy on BG,” Sherrell said.
She fears what will happen if Griner’s appeal is dismissed.
“If hearings are held and orders are finalized, BG could be moved to a labor camp,” Cherelle said. “My brain can’t even make sense of it.”
She added that while waiting for her freedom, Greiner was already suffering.
“I don’t know if there’s anything left in her tank because she wakes up every day and finds herself in a place where no one is around,” Sherrell said.
Sherrell said his wife is “at the weakest point of her life right now” and fears she will be forgotten in Russia.
“She’s telling me things like, ‘I don’t care about my life anymore,'” Sherrell said. “‘I feel like I don’t care about my life. I’m just thrown out for people’s enjoyment and gain.'”

“When Trevor Reed was released, you thought it was Britney Griner because I was so happy. Okay, I went on Instagram and posted it and I was so happy for his family because I know what I feel.I’m happy,” she said.
The White House said a sizeable deal was under consideration and urged Russia to consider it or come up with a strong counteroffer.
