Parkinson’s Disease Specialist Visits White House, Consults with President Biden’s Physician

President Joe Biden has not seen a neurologist outside of his annual physicals since taking office, his physician clarified in a letter Monday night, addressing reports of visits by a Parkinson’s disease expert to the White House.

Dr. Kevin O’Connor, Biden’s physician, responded to reports about Dr. Kevin Cannard, a Parkinson’s disease specialist, who visited the White House eight times over eight months, including once with O’Connor, according to official visitor logs. Cannard supports the White House Medical Unit as a neurology specialist, with his visits including one meeting with O’Connor and two others at the White House residence clinic on January 17, as first reported by the New York Post.

In his letter addressed to White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, O’Connor emphasized that these visits did not involve President Biden. “President Biden has not seen a neurologist outside of his annual physical,” he wrote.

During a press briefing earlier Monday, Jean-Pierre did not specify the reason for Cannard’s visits or who he was seeing. She mentioned that “thousands of military personnel” receive care from the White House medical unit but cited privacy considerations in discussing Cannard’s visits.

O’Connor elaborated in his letter, stating that Cannard holds regular neurological clinics at the White House to support “thousands of active-duty members assigned in support of White House operations.” He noted, “Many military personnel experience neurological issues related to their service, and Dr. Cannard regularly visits the WHMU related to this General Neurology practice.”

Jean-Pierre confirmed that Biden has undergone neurological exams three times during his presidency as part of his annual physicals at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. She did not clarify whether Cannard’s visits involved Biden or other individuals at the White House.

O’Connor confirmed that Cannard was Biden’s neurologist during his physicals. Biden’s most recent physical, conducted in February, found “no findings which would be consistent with any cerebellar or other central neurological disorder” including Parkinson’s disease.

“Has the president been treated for Parkinson’s? No,” Jean-Pierre said Monday. “Is he being treated for Parkinson’s? No, he’s not. Is he taking medication for Parkinson’s? No.”

The visitor logs, released by the White House, document Cannard’s visits from August 2023 through March this year, with the last recorded visit on March 28. Any more recent visits would not be disclosed until later under the White House’s voluntary disclosure policy, as reported by the New York Times.

These revelations follow questions about Biden’s mental acuity and calls from some Democrats for him to drop out of the 2024 election. Biden has rejected these calls, citing strong support during the Democratic primary and dismissing concerns about his age and mental fitness.
