Ukraine allegedly tried to kill Vladimir Putin’s commander-in-chief during a secret visit to the front lines – despite being warned by the US not to do so.
According to US officials, Russia has begun moving top generals to the front lines of Putin’s war to bolster its own defenses and boost morale in its struggling military.
But the generals made themselves easier to find, the US said.
And in April, Russia’s Chief of the General Staff, General Valery Gerasimo, 66, allegedly hatched a secret plan to go to the front lines.
according to new york timesUS officials warned Ukraine that killing General Gerasimov could sharply escalate the conflict.
The US has made it clear it is committed to helping Ukraine but did not want to provoke a war between the US and Russia, the official said.
After checking with the White House, senior American officials called on the Ukrainians to call off the attack.
“We told them not to,” a senior American official told the New York Times.
“We were like, ‘Hey, that’s overkill.'”
But Ukrainian military officials told the US that they had already launched an attack on the general.
Dozens of Russians died in the attack, but General Gerasimov was not one of them.
At the time, unofficial Russian sources said he was injured in a strike reportedly carried out in Izm.
A senior Ukrainian government official, Anton Gerashchenko, also claimed that “a large number” of Russian officials had been killed.
After the strike, Russian military leaders reportedly scaled back their visits to the front lines.
It comes after US officials say Russian generals discussed the use of tactical nuclear weapons in Ukraine.
Putin was absent from the conversation at the Kremlin, reportedly against the backdrop of nuclear rhetoric, which is increasingly tense between Russia and the West.
A National Security Council official, John F. Kirby, declined to comment on “details” of the language used by Vlad insiders, but added: , and we take them seriously.
“We are continuing to monitor this as best we can and see no indication that Russia is preparing for such use.”
Russia’s fearsome nuclear weapons It is believed to contain up to 6,000 warheads, enough to cause global devastation and 200-300 million casualties.
This includes some 2,000 tactical nuclear weapons designed to be used on the battlefield to overwhelm conventional forces.
Such weapons have never been used in combat before, but they can be deployed in a variety of ways, including artillery shells and missiles.
The use of even smaller tactical nukes could kill thousands and leave some Ukraine I can’t live there for years.
