A series of large and devastating earthquakes has thrown parts of the Middle East into turmoil. On Monday, Syria and Turkey were rocked by one of the worst natural disasters to hit neighboring countries in recent years and one of the worst earthquake events in the past decade.

The quake was just the beginning of the latest incident, with another 5.7-magnitude quake on Tuesday, with hundreds of aftershocks in between. Photographs and videos of people on the ground show widespread debris from the collapsed building and countless people being rescued from debris.

Syria and Turkey – at least 7,000
Tens of thousands have been injured in Syria and Turkey, and thousands more bodies have been recovered since Monday’s magnitude-7.8 earthquake. The worst-hit countries are known to have the “largest refugee population in the world,” according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. Turkey hosts more than 3.5 million of her refugees seeking safety from the Syrian civil war.
