Despite calls to resign and ongoing federal, state and local investigations, Rep. George Santos (RN.Y.) declared Monday that he would run for re-election.
The disgraced politician made the announcement on Twitter.
Santos’ decision to run for governor again despite being caught lying about his past multiple times, both before and after winning last year’s election.
Santos said in a statement Monday that no one expected him to win in 2022. However, he claimed to have won by more than 8% of him. He defeated Democrat Robert Zimmerman by a margin of 53.8% to 46.2%.
“Not only did I win, but I made history by being elected to Congress as the first Republican to come out as gay,” he said.
Santos’ re-election campaign is now reportedly on a tight budget. As of March 31, he had only $25,000 in his campaign accounts, according to a campaign finance report filed with the Federal Election Commission on Saturday.stIn the first three months of the year, the campaign only made $5,000 and spent $8,000. All of which went towards refunding donations to previous donors.
Democratic Nassau County Representative Josh Raffazan has launched a campaign against Santos’ seat.
In a tweet, Rafazan claimed he and his team raised $350,000 to get George Santos out of the House of Representatives.
Santos vehemently denies recent accusations that he was the brains behind a credit card “skimmer scheme.” He has also been accused of lying, publicly claiming his mother was at the World Trade Center during her 9/11 attacks. In addition, Santos is believed to have stolen thousands of dollars raised for veterans’ service dogs in life-saving surgeries and failed to file proper and timely financial returns.
The Santos investigation was launched by the House Ethics Committee in March. The panel said it would investigate whether Santos “engaged in illegal activities in relation to the 2022 parliamentary elections.” He did not disclose the required information in a statement submitted to the House of Representatives. He has violated federal conflict of interest laws in connection with his role in a firm that provides fiduciary services. and/or committed a sexual misconduct against an individual seeking employment. ”
The FBI is investigating Santos for a veteran’s service dog claim. A veteran’s service dog died without receiving money for surgery.
He is also the subject of inquiries from the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office and the New York State Attorney General’s office.
