Denton, TX (KXAN) — opal leerecognized as “Juneteenth’s Grandmother” and celebrated with the graduates at the University of North Texas over the weekend.
96 years old from Marshall awarded an honorary doctorate Sunday as part of the UNT Spring Commencement Ceremony.
Lee Graduated from UNT In 1963, he received a master’s degree in education.
A retired educator, she was a key figure in the movement to make Juneteenth a national holiday.
In 2016, she started walking 2.5 miles in cities across the country. These miles represented the two-and-a-half years it took to bring the word of liberation to all the slaves.
and the crowd began to join her. These walks prompted President Joe Biden to sign legislation making Juneteenth a federal holiday in 2021.
Lee has been nominated for the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize. Commended by the Texas Senate in Februaryher portrait will be displayed in the Houses of Parliament to honor her leadership and achievements.
