Is Sport Really That Popular in Texas

Is Sport Really That Popular in Texas

It can be said that nowhere in the United States do they love sports as much as they do in Texas, and with good reason: Texans are known for doing everything big. A testament to this is that they boast three NBA and three MLS teams, making them basketball and soccer giants. Texas has a population that dwarfs many states, and this guarantees a big following.

Here we will be listing all of the biggest sports you can follow in Texas and detailing the biggest and most popular clubs in each of those respective sports. American football is a sport loved by millions, so it shouldn’t be a surprise that it kicks off our list.

Football has got to be the biggest sport in Texas, with millions loving the sport and following their teams with unwavering loyalty. Whether it be NFL or College Football, Texans absolutely love the game, which should not come as a surprise to anybody. Can you name a more iconic partnership than College Football and Texans holding a huge tailgate party?

Texas Longhorns is the college team representing the University of Texas, situated in Austin, and they compete in the NCAA Division 1. They are one of the most successful college football teams in the country, boasting an impressive 8 national titles, of which 4 are unclaimed. The most recent national title that the Texas Longhorns team won was back in 2005.

Houston Texans is the NFL team that represents the state of Texas in the Nation Football League. They compete in the American Football Conference Southern Division, alongside the likes of the Tennessee Titans and the Indianapolis Colts. The Texas Titans last won the division title in 2019, having also done so the previous year, marking a recent surge.

Soccer is growing faster than almost any other sport in recent years, and the fact that Texas now has 3 soccer teams reflects that increase in interest. FC Dallas, founded in 1995, Houston Dynamo FC, founded in 2005, and Austin FC, which was founded in 2018 and debuted in 2021, represent three of the most populous cities in the state.

Given the size of Texas, it shouldn’t come as a shock if San Antonio, Fort Worth, and El Paso soon have their own top-level soccer teams as they are all big cities. For comparison, recent Champions League and English Premier League winners Liverpool FC are based in a city with a lower population than all those cities, and which is home to two top division soccer teams.

FC Dallas is probably the best soccer team in the state right now, finishing 11th overall in the MLS last season and having a number of players who have played at the top level in Europe. On the other hand, Houston Dynamo FC finished second from bottom last season and looks very poor, despite having veteran forward Darwin Quintilla leading the forward line.

Football is a sport loved by Texans and is probably second only to basketball in terms of popularity. The Texas Rangers, the NBA team who share a name with the law enforcement agency, play their home games at the newly built Globe Life Field, previously having played at Globe Life Park from 1994 until 2019. They moved to their new stadium, in Arlington, in 2020.

The Texas Rangers were previously known as Washington Senators from 1961 until 1971, prior to their move to Texas in 1972. The Texas Rangers are yet to win a World Series title but have won 7 West Division titles, many of which have come in recent years. The Texas Rangers won back-to-back titles in 2010 and 2011, and in 2015 and 2016.

Basketball is big business down in Texas, with there being three NBA teams located in the Lone Star State. The state is home to the Houston Rockets, the Dallas Mavericks, and the San Antonio Spurs, meaning that Texas’ team tally is second only to California and the four NBA teams located there. Make no mistake; Texas is a basketball powerhouse.

The Houston Rockets are probably the most popular NBA team in Texas, but the answer isn’t quite so black and white. Historically speaking, the San Antonio Spurs are probably the most successful of the three Texas-based teams, but they haven’t been the team they once were and are yet to reach the heights they hit during the early years of the 2010s.

The Houston Rockets are an incredible team and have had some amazing players on their roster in the past few years, with the likes of James Harden, Hakeem Olajuwon, and the legendary Yao Ming making them a team to be scared of. The signing of Yao Ming helped make the Houston Rockets become a team loved and followed by many in China.

Formula One

Formula One, or F1 as it’s more commonly known, is a sport loved by millions globally, and it has been growing in popularity in the USA in recent years. In a country that loved car racing, you would have thought that Formula One would have been an immediate hit, but NASCAR was the dominant sport. Things seem to be changing, though, with Americans starting to love Formula One.

The United States Grand Prix is the United States’ stop in the Formula One season and is raced at the Circuit of the Americas racecourse in Austin. It hasn’t always been this way, with the race previously hosted in Indianapolis from 2000 until 2007, but Austin has been home to the United States Grand Prix since 2012, though there was no race there in 2020.

Formula One left Indianapolis back in 2007 due to high costs and little return on investment. However, in 2010 the then Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone announced that a deal had been signed that would see the United States Grand Prix return to the schedule. It would be based in Austin at the purpose-built track, and a 10 year contract had been signed.
