A man shot and killed a woman and her 18-month-old daughter, injured another child, and was found dead hours later by suicide on the banks of the Merrimack River, according to New Hampshire officials.
New Hampshire Assistant Attorney General Adam Woods said at an evening press conference that the man, Jamie Bell, 42, was spotted fleeing his home in Franklin on Saturday afternoon. Neighbors said they heard gunshots.
When police arrived at the home, Woods said they found Nicole Hughes, 35, and Jamie Bell’s daughter, Ariella Bell, shot dead.
Woods said Hughes and Jamie Bell are “close partners.” He did not reveal any further details about their relationship.
Hughes’ 5-year-old daughter, who was born to another associate of Hughes, was shot in the arm and had a cut on her back, Woods said. She was taken to a hospital in Massachusetts. Her injuries were not considered life-threatening.
Police spent hours searching for Bell, who was initially identified as a person of interest, on foot and by helicopter.
During the search, police warned residents to stay indoors because Bell was armed and considered dangerous. CBS Boston reported.
“I immediately locked the door and made sure to keep the kids away from the windows and everyone,” neighbor Kimberly Michaels told the station. “I think of my family.”
An autopsy on Sunday confirmed that Hughes and her daughter were murdered, and that Jamie Bell died from a single self-inflicted wound to the neck, according to CBS Boston. report.
