You can now search using text and images together on Google

Google is making the online search process easier with its new “multi-search” feature. While this feature isn’t entirely unexpected, it’s been long overdue since it was teased last December.

With the multi-search function, users can simultaneously search text and images through Google Lens. For now, it is in beta mode in English in the United States only. The feature will begin beta testing today.

“At Google, we’re always thinking up new ways to help you discover the information you’re looking for, even if it’s hard to articulate what you need,” Google said in a blog post. “That’s why today we’re introducing a whole new method of research: the simultaneous use of text and images. With multi-search on Lens, you can go beyond the search box and ask questions about what you see.

This will surely be the news of the hour for shopaholics, whose search for the items of their desire will be considerably facilitated. A dress caught your attention but you prefer the same one in another color? Or maybe with a different pattern? The multiple search function is for you.

First, make sure you have the latest version of the Google app on your Android or iOS device. Then present an image with Google Lens through your camera’s viewfinder to identify an object in the physical world or by selecting an existing image from your camera roll.

Next, swipe up and click the “+ Add to your search” button. Customize your search now with what you’re looking for using text, and Google will show you what you’re looking for.

Now that you have an idea of how the feature works, you can ask where it will be applicable. The most obvious answer to this question is shopping – it seems like the feature is almost made for shopaholics – but it can be used for so much more. Of course, with an infinite search box, there are endless search combinations (including text and images) and Google can’t promise that the multiple search feature will be perfect for every search.

“We want to help people understand questions naturally,” said Lou Wang, director of research at Google.

Undoubtedly, however, it will help people search for items that they may have trouble describing more precisely. You have a pair of shoes that are dear to you, but they are worn out and you want a similar pair but in a different color (for example, black), then the multiple search function will be useful for you. Plus, you can use it to find “how to fix” solutions when something needs fixing.
