WNBA’s Griner remand in custody extended to 1 month

WNBA star Brittney Griner’s lawyer said on Friday that her detention in Russia had been extended by one month.

Griner’s lawyer, Alexander Boikov, told the Associated Press that he believed a relatively short extension of detention indicated that the case would be brought to court soon.

Griner, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, was detained at a Moscow airport after a canister containing cannabis oil was found in her luggage, which could carry a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.

The Biden administration says Griner, 31, is being held illegally. The WNBA and US officials have been working on its solution, with no visible progress.
