(Reuters)-Chicago Sky defeated Phoenix Mercury 80-74 to win the Best of Five Final Series 3-1 on Sunday, winning its first franchise championship.
Mercury seemed ready to force Game 5 when he took a 14-point lead in the second half of the third quarter, but at 72 in the fourth quarter, Candace Parker’s wide open three-points. I tied the game with and Sky is back.
Sky took the lead of Stefanie Dolson’s back-to-back bucket, blocking Mercury’s last possession and winning the title, enthusiastic about the sold-out Chicago crowd.
Allie Quigley scored 26 points and Guard and his wife Courtney Vandersloo rebounded from a triple-double as Sky won behind a balanced attack he had been riding throughout the season.
“I’m very proud of this group,” Parker said. Parker finished with 16 points, 13 rebounds and 4 steals, winning his second championship.
“We are very proud of our fight and the spirit of the next man. With Steve coming in and having those two layups, Salute is doing what she did all year long. Also. Great.
“Here is the whole city. It’s amazing how Chicago supports us. We are now the champions of life.”
Mercury, blown away in Game 3, was much better throughout the first three quarters.
Visitors finished the first half 9-0, leading 44-37 and 63-54 at the end of the third quarter, with Brittney Griner scoring a high score of 28 points. ..
However, in the fourth quarter, it surpassed Mercury 26-11 in the final period and belonged to Sky, who brought the trophy to Chicago.
