WIMBLEDON – The latest from Wimbledon (all local times):
Wimbledon has its first quarterfinal in women’s singles: Czech Marie Bouzkova.
Bouzkova beat Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia 7-5, 6-2 in a fourth-round match on track number 2 to reach her first Grand Slam quarterfinals.
Bouzkova, 23, will then face third seed Ons Jabeur or Elise Mertens for a place in the semifinals.
Bouzkova defeated seventh seed Danielle Collins in the first round.
Roger Federer returned to Wimbledon as the All England Club prepared to celebrate the centenary of the central court.
Federer has won eight Wimbledon titles, a men’s singles record, but has not played in the grass tournament for the first time since his 1999 debut.
The 20-time Grand Slam champion wore a dark suit and white sneakers as he walked across the field toward the center court.
Federer said earlier this year that any comeback from his knee surgery tournament last year will not be until at least the end of the summer.
The 40-year-old Swiss has not played since losing in the quarter-finals at Wimbledon a year ago in his 22nd appearance in the tournament.
Three-time defending champion Novak Djokovic will return to the center court on the 7th at Wimbledon when the fourth round game begins.
The traditional mid-Sunday rest day at the All England Club no longer exists. A British player, Heather Watson, will be the first on the center court to mark the occasion. He will face Jule Niemeier.
Fifth seed Carlos Alcaraz then plays Jannik Sinner, before first seed Djokovic is last in the main stadium against Dutchman Tim van Rijthoven.
On track No. 1, third seed, Ons Jabeur, will face Elise Mertens.
