A monkey flower incident occurred approved by health workers In Massachusetts – the first case of a rare virus detected in the United States in 2022. Another potential event in New York investigated. The disease occurs in animals, but can rarely be transmitted to humans. What exactly is a monkey flower and its symptoms?

Origin

The monkey belongs to the same family of viruses that contain the variola virus that causes smallpox; vaccinia virus used in vaccination against smallpox; and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It was discovered in a monkey colony in 1958, and its first human path was recorded in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1970, but in humans in other countries.

Cases outside of Africa are linked to international travel or imported animals. There have been cases in Israel, Singapore, the United Kingdom and the United States. In July 2021, the World Health Organization reported a human monkey pox outbreak in Dallas, Texas. The patient came from Nigeria.

The natural reservoir of the ape flower remains unknown, but according to the CDC, African rodents such as monkeys and non-human primates can carry the virus and infect humans.

Monkey flower symptoms

In humans, the symptoms of monkey pox are similar to the symptoms of measles, but the main difference is that monkey pox causes swelling of the lymph nodes, the CDC says.

The incubation period for a monkey flower, or the time from infection to the onset of symptoms, is usually 7-14 days. It begins with fever, headache, muscle aches, and exhaustion, and usually within a day or three the patient develops a rash, which often begins on the face and then spreads to other parts of the body.

The lesions progress, fill with fluid, then itch and fall off. Monkeypox usually lasts two to four weeks. In Africa, the disease kills 1 in 10 people.

Prevention and treatment

There is no specific treatment for monkey pox, but there are vaccines according to the CDC. Infections can be controlled.

Experts believe that the ape flower spreads among humans through respiratory droplets or direct contact with damaged material. Patients treated in the hospital are isolated to prevent the spread of the virus. Patients who do not require hospitalization should still be isolated at home and take precautionary measures.

People with extensive lesions that cannot be easily covered, including drainage or weeping lesions, or with respiratory symptoms, should be isolated from family members in a separate room. They should not leave their homes until they receive medical care. They should also avoid pets.

An infected person may wear personal protective equipment such as masks, and other people in the home should consider doing the same when they are nearby. Disposable gloves should be worn to avoid direct contact with lesions and injuries should be covered as well as possible. People should consult with state or local health officials regarding the disposal of contaminated waste such as dressings.
