Walmart CEO Doug McMillon told employees he was considering how to respond to a Supreme Court decision that ended the company’s federal right to abortion on Friday.
“We are working diligently and responsibly to find the best way forward, guided by the desire to support our partners, all of our members,” he said in a note sent to staff on Friday. “We will share the details of our actions as soon as possible, recognizing that time is of the essence.”
He did not say what changes the company is considering, such as whether it could cover the travel expenses of workers who have to move to another state where there is an abortion.

Arkansas, the headquarters of Walmart, is one of the states with strict restrictions or bans on abortion after the Supreme Court ruling.
Walmart is also the largest private employer in the country. It has about 1.6 million employees nationwide, including many who live and work in Sunbelt states with abortion restrictions such as Texas, Oklahoma and Florida.
Supreme Court Roe v. Since Wade backed out, companies across the country have had a number of reactions. Some, including JPMorgan Chase, Dick’s Sporting Goods and Target, have announced new plans to cover travel to other states to abort workers. Others, such as Kroger and Apple, said they already cover travel for medical treatments and reproductive health. And others have remained silent.
Amazon, the country’s second-largest private employer, said in May it would pay $ 4,000 a year in medical expenses that do not endanger life in travel expenses, including abortions.
Walmart already covers staff travel for certain medical procedures, such as some heart surgeries, cancer treatments and organ transplants.
Walmart’s health benefits only cover a few abortions. According to the company’s employee handbook, “expenses for procedures, services, medications and supplies related to abortions or abortion are not covered, except when the mother’s health would be at risk, if the fetus was born in half, it could be a fetus to survive the birth, or death would be immediate after birth “.
Plan B, a type of over-the-counter contraceptive, only covers if the person gets a prescription. The pill, often called the “daily pill,” prevents ovulation or prevents the fertilized egg from sticking to the belly. It can be taken after unprotected sex or when the contraceptive fails.
Other types of contraceptives are also covered with a prescription, including birth control pills, injections, and intrauterine devices or IUDs. Some anti-abortion activists also oppose IUDs because they can stop the implantation of a fertilized egg in the uterus.
In a statement Friday, McMillon said Walmart has collected employee contributions while deciding what to do. He also mentioned the size and diversity of the company and the customer base.
“We know that our members and customers have different opinions on the issue, and it’s a sensitive issue that many of us feel strongly about,” he said. “We want you to know that we see you. Whatever your attitude on this issue, we want you to feel respected, valued and supported.”
