Wall to be bought, intends to join Clippers

John Wall and the Houston Rockets have agreed that his contract will be bought, a move that will allow him to sign with any team he chooses, according to two people familiar with the situation on Monday night.

Wall’s preference will be to sign with the Los Angeles Clippers, according to one of the people who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the five-time All-Star escort had not publicly announced his intentions.

Wall will receive about $ 41 million from Houston, according to another person who spoke to AP. Wall was scheduled to earn $ 47.4 million next season, his last in what was a four-year contract.

Yahoo first reported that Wall and the Rockets had made the purchase decision. ESPN first reported that Wall intends to join the Clippers, presumably for the average taxpayer-level exception of about $ 6.4 million, basically the same amount he returns to the Rockets to become a free agent. No agreement can be reached between Wall and any team until the latter clarifies the waivers and becomes a free agent.

Announcement

Wall has been working on it in recent weeks, including some sessions at the University of Miami.

Wall played 40 games with Houston in the 2020-21 season, averaging 20.6 points and 6.9 assists. He played his first nine seasons in Washington and, in his career, averaged 19.1 points and 9.1 assists in 613 games of the regular season.

Wall has not appeared in any Houston games this past season. The Rockets are rebuilding around a new core and Wall, who will turn 32 in September, was not going to be on his plans for the future.

He was selected for the All-Star Game in five consecutive seasons from 2014 to 2018. Since the last of those selections 4 and a half seasons ago, he has played exactly 82 games, including playoffs, the equivalent of one NBA season, while earning $ 150 million on salary and seeing his career derailed by injuries.

Wall has a long injury and surgical history. He underwent surgery on both knees in 2016, the 2018-19 season ended prematurely due to bone spur surgery on his left heel, then a ruptured left Achilles tendon required another operation in 2019 and a recovery plan for a year.

Announcement

He hasn’t appeared in an NBA game since April 23, 2021.

The development of Wall and the Rockets by reaching a purchase agreement comes on the same day that another high-profile bank, Kyrie Irving of Brooklyn, announced that it is exercising its $ 36.9 million option for the last year of its according to the Nets.

The NBA free agency officially opens Thursday with the start of trading windows. In most cases, new contracts can be signed from 6 July.
