HONG KONG-Volkswagen reiterated its commitment to produce vehicles in China’s western Xinjiang region, an area where Western politicians, academics and human rights groups say Beijing is forcibly assimilating ethnic minorities.
The German automaker plans to continue operating its plant in Xinjiang and is open to a site visit by a human rights expert recently appointed by the company’s board, Stephan Wollenstein, the outgoing CEO of Volkswagen China said on Friday. He said the decision to continue operating the plant, which has been operating at reduced levels, was made after discussion with Volkswagen’s Chinese joint venture partner, state-owned SAIC Group.
