Volkswagen publishes a false news release announcing the new brand name Volkswagen

The Volkswagen of America issued a false statement this week to change its brand name to “Voltswagen”. This, on the surface, is a way of emphasizing the approach to electric vehicles, reversing the course on Tuesday and admitting that the possible renaming is just a joke.

The company’s spokesman, Mark Gillies, confirmed on Tuesday that the statement was a pre-April Fool’s joke after claiming that the release was legal on Monday and the name change was accurate.

The company’s erroneous release was redistributed on Tuesday, saying the brand name change reflects VW’s switch to more battery-powered electric vehicles.

The company is trying to change its image and recover from the 2015 scandal, which allowed diesel vehicles to illegally pollute the air by tricking government emissions tests.
