Woods Lagoon, California “A man opened fire over lunch at a church in Southern California on Sunday, killing one person and wounding several others before being stopped and tied up by parishioners in what a sheriff’s official called an act of” extraordinary heroism and courage. “
One person was fatally shot and four others were seriously injured in a shooting at the Presbyterian Church in Geneva in the city of Laguna Woods, Orange County Sheriff’s Office said. A sixth man was slightly injured but was not hit by bullets.
Deputy Sheriff Jeff Halok said the suspect in the shooting, an Asian man in his 60s, was in custody and lawmakers found two guns at the scene. The motive for the shooting was not immediately known, but investigators do not believe the gunman lived in the community, he said.
Most of those in the church at the time are believed to be of Taiwanese descent, said Carrie Brown, a spokeswoman for the sheriff.
Between 30 and 40 members of the Taiwanese Presbyterian Church in Irvine gathered for lunch after a morning church service in Geneva when a shooting broke out shortly before 1:30 p.m., officials said. When the deputies arrived, the parishioners tied up the shooter and detained him.
“We believe that this group of church people showed extraordinary heroism and courage by intervening to stop the suspects. They undoubtedly prevented further injuries and deaths, “Halok said. “I think it’s safe to say that if people didn’t intervene, it could have been a lot worse.
All the victims are elderly Americans of Asian descent, and the youngest of the victims is 66 years old, Brown said.
The investigation is at an early stage, Halok said. He said many unanswered questions included whether the attacker was present at the church service, whether he was known to church members and how many shots were fired.
The afternoon was in honor of a former pastor of the Taiwanese Congregation, according to a statement from the Los Ranchos Presbytery, a church administration.
“Please keep the leadership of the Taiwanese Congregation and Geneva in your prayers as they care for those injured in the shooting,” Tom Kramer said in a statement on Facebook.
Federal agents from the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives responded. The FBI also sent agents to the scene to help the sheriff.
Woods Lagoon was built as a community for the elderly and later became a city. More than 80 percent of the city’s population of 18,000, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) southeast of Los Angeles, is at least 65 years old.
Governor Gavin Newsom’s office said on Twitter that he was closely monitoring the situation.
“No one should be afraid to go to the place of worship. Our thoughts are with the victims, the community and everyone affected by this tragic event, “the tweet said.
The incident took place in an area with a group of houses of worship, including Catholic, Lutheran and Methodist churches and a Jewish synagogue.
On its website, the Geneva Presbyterian Church describes its mission as “remembering, telling and living the way of Jesus, being just, kind and humble.”
“Everyone is welcome here. Indeed, we mean this! “Geneva strives to be an inclusive congregation that worships, teaches, connects, gives and serves together.”
The shooting came a day after an 18-year-old man shot dead 10 people at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York.
“This is disturbing and disturbing news, especially less than a day after the mass shooting in Buffalo,” said Katie Porter, a spokeswoman for the United States, whose area includes Laguna Woods. “It doesn’t have to be our new normal. I will work hard to support the victims and their families. “
