Vice President Harris resigns from Senate on Monday

Wilmington, Delaware – Vice President-elect Kamala Harris will resign from the Senate on Monday, two days before she and President-elect Joe Biden take office.

California Democratic Aide confirmed the timing, Governor Gavin Newsom was aware of her decision, and the Democratic Party, now the Secretary of State of California, to serve the last two years of Harris’ term. He said he paved the way for the appointment of member Alex Padilla.

Padilla will be the first Latino senator from California, where approximately 40% of the residents are Hispanic. Newsom announced his choice in December, following intense lobbying for rare Senate vacancies from the most populous states in the United States.

Harris does not say goodbye in the Senate. The Senate will not be reconvened until Tuesday, the eve of his inauguration.

The arrival of Padilla will be the chair of the Senate when Harris becomes Vice President and will be part of the majority of the Democratic Party’s next Senate. However, the party still has to swear after Georgia’s Senators John Osov and Raphael Warnock have been recognized as winners in the January 5 elections.

Harris is the first black woman to serve as Vice President and the first woman of South Asian descent, but her Senate departure leaves the Chamber of Commerce roster without a black woman. Harris was the second black female senator to win the California elections 17 years after Democrat Carol Moseley Braun completed her single term on behalf of Illinois.

Among the many potential successors to Harris, Newsom handed over at least two prominent black women, Karen Bass and Barbara Lee. Bass was also one of Biden’s finalists to run his companions.

Democrats were a minority while Harris spent four years at Capitol Hill. Perhaps her greatest achievement came as a member of the House Judiciary Committee and as a fierce questioner of judicial candidates and other witnesses.

Harris was considered a future presidential candidate shortly after joining the Senate in 2017. She announced a bid for the White House in January 2019, but dropped out in December after a slumping campaign before voting in the first election in Iowa. Caucus of the country. Former Senator Biden invited her to a national ticket in August.

The victory of Osov and Warnock in Georgia secured a 50-50 Senate, positioning Harris as a Democratic tiebreaker vote. However, Osov and Warnock will not be able to attend the meeting room until Georgia Secretary of State Brad Rafensperger proves the final vote. Republican Lafence Purger said he could act on Tuesday, perhaps allowing Padilla, Osov and Warnock to join the Senate in the afternoon session.

However, the Republican Party will maintain a majority until all three are inaugurated and Harris chairs it.

There are several precedents for early withdrawal from Harris’ Senate.

Biden was the last senator to be elected Vice President. He resigned from the Delaware post on January 15, 2009, five days before he and Barack Obama took office. Obama, a senator at the time of the election, resigned from his seat in Illinois two months before Biden.
