Former Special Forces, lift driver shot dead in Washington DC – One America News Network

Police in Washington, D.C., are searching for the man who shot and killed a 31-year-old lift driver who was a former Afghan special forces interpreter.

Nasrat Ahmad Yal, 31, was found shot in his car shortly after midnight on Monday. The Metropolitan Police Department responded to a distress call about a person who lost consciousness after midnight, and after arriving, found the driver shot and seriously injured inside the car.

D.C. fire and ambulance services later took Yar to a local hospital for treatment, but he later died, officials said.

Surveillance footage provided by police showed four people fleeing the area shortly after Yarl was shot. No suspects have been identified at this time, and police are offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to an arrest, according to a press release.

Yar was previously an interpreter who worked with US special forces in Afghanistan for a decade before the Taliban occupation, according to a verifiable GoFundMe page. In addition, he was the sole caregiver for his wife and his four children aged 15 months to 13 years.

Yal’s cousin, Mohammad Ahmadi, who served as an interpreter for the U.S. military, said those returning to Afghanistan were appalled by the murder because they thought the U.S. capital was a safe place.

“People in my country are in shock,” Ahmadi said. “All my family, my friends, everyone. No one will believe me when I say it’s happening in Washington DC.”

Police figures show a 19% year-to-date increase in homicides and a 30% increase in total violent crime in the city from 2022 to date.

As city councilors prepare to vote on emergency legislation, local leaders held a rally on Thursday to appeal for more support from the public. A new bill, introduced by City Councilman Brooke Pinto, aims to fill gaps in the district’s criminal justice system.

“Our hearts are with Mr Nasrat’s loved ones in the face of this unspeakable tragedy. We are in contact with them,” a Lyft spokesperson said.
