Atlanta — The United States requires airline passengers from the United Kingdom to undergo a negative COVID-19 test before flight, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced late Thursday.
The United States is the latest country to announce new travel restrictions due to a new variant of the coronavirus that is spreading in the United Kingdom and elsewhere.
The CDC said in a statement that airline passengers from the United Kingdom would have to test negative for COVID-19 within three days of traveling and provide the results to the airline. The agency said the order was signed on Friday and will take effect on Monday.
“If a passenger chooses not to take the exam, the airline must refuse to board the passenger,” the CDC said in a statement.
United Airlines requires a negative coronavirus test for passengers leaving the UK
The agency said air travel from the UK to the US has already dropped by 90% due to travel restrictions since March.
Last weekend, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that new variants of the coronavirus appear to be spreading more easily than previous ones and are moving rapidly throughout the UK. But Johnson emphasized that “there is no evidence to suggest that it is more deadly or causes a more serious illness,” or that the vaccine would be less effective against it.
This week, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo tells passengers that three airlines operating flights from London to New York, British Airways, Delta Air Lines and Virgin Atlantic, will take the COVID-19 test before boarding the plane. He said he agreed to request. United Airlines agreed on Thursday to do the same for its flight to Newark, NJ.
The UK has been under considerable pressure since the wording of a new variant of the virus was published. About 40 countries have imposed travel bans on Britain, leaving island nations increasingly isolated.

French officials said delivery drivers could enter by ferry or tunnel if they showed evidence of a negative virus test.
However, French regulation was of particular concern given that Britain relied heavily on cross-channel commercial ties to the continent during this period.
