PARIS – The latest on the French Open tennis tournament (all local time):
Daniil Medvedev started his French Open with victory, it was never safe for the Russian second seed.
The U.S. Open champion defeated Argentine Facundo Bagnis 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 on the Suzanne Lenglen track.
Medvedev was in the quarterfinals at Roland Garros last year after four straight defeats in the first round.
The Russian has achieved his first victory since undergoing hernia surgery almost two months ago. Last week he had lost his opening match at the Geneva Open on his return.
Medvedev reached the final of the Australian Open this year, losing to Rafael Nadal in five sets.
11 in the morning
The first round of the French Open is scheduled to end on the 3rd and the first two men in the bottom half of the draw are finally starting: second seed Daniil Medvedev and fourth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas.
U.S. Open champion Medvedev recently returned to tour after hernia surgery and opens the morning at Suzanne Lenglen Court against Facundo Bagnis.
At the other end of the calendar, 2021 Roland Garros runner-up Tsitsipas closes the action in court Philippe Chatrier with a nightly clash against Lorenzo Musetti.
The top half of the men’s draw is considered much tougher. It includes defending champion Novak Djokovic, 13-time champion Rafael Nadal, No. 6 Carlos Alcaraz and US Open 2020 finalist Alexander Zverev.
Leading women in action on Tuesday are two-time senior champion Simona Halep and No. 3 seed Paula Badosa.
