ANDREWS, Texas (CBSDFW.COM/AP) – A bus carrying members of Southwestern University’s golf team collided head-on with a pickup truck in West Texas, killing several team members and a coach.
The cars crashed on a two-lane road in Andrews County, about nine miles northwest of Midland-Odessa, on Tuesday night, and Sgt. Stephen Blanco of the Texas Department of Public Safety told KWES-TV that both cars were dead.

On Wednesday morning, the University issued a partial statement –
“Nine passengers, including a bus, were on the university bus in the fatal accident. While the investigation into the accident was underway, seven passengers on the bus were reported killed in the crash. Two of the passengers are in critical condition and are receiving medical treatment in Lubbock, Texas. USW coordinates with Texas DPS to assist in research and public awareness efforts.
DPS later confirmed that the driver and a passenger in the pickup were also killed. According to preliminary data, the accident occurred as a result of the truck driver crossing the middle line.
The bus was carrying members of the men’s and women’s golf teams from the golf tournament, and Blanco said the other car involved was a Dodge 2,500.
The teams were scheduled to play a tournament on Tuesday at Midland College, about 315 miles west of Dallas. At least one member of the men’s team is from Metroplex. Jonathan Flores grew up in Colleyville and attended Colleyville Heritage High School. It is unknown whether he was one of the golfers visiting the Midlands.

Southwestern University is a private, Christian college located in Hobbes, New Mexico, near the state’s border with Texas.
University President Quint Thurman said in a statement that Tyler James, who runs both men’s and women’s golf teams, was among those killed.
“We are still learning the details of the crash, but learning about the loss of life of our students and their coach shocked and deeply saddened us,” Thurman said.
The university said on social media that it was trying to alert family members to those involved in the crash and that counseling and religious services would be provided on campus.
An investigation is underway into the accident. The road where the accident took place – near FM 1788, SH 115 – was closed on Wednesday morning.
The accident happened in the same area – but not on the same road – in November, when a truck hit a school bus carrying members of the Andrews High School group, killing three people.
