Ukraine, France and Germany hold security talks

Paris – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky meets with French President Emmanuel Macron and German Prime Minister Angela Merkel on Friday amid heightened tensions with Russia, which has troops on the border with the country.

Zelenskyy is traveling to Paris to meet Macron at lunch at President Elysee’s Palace. According to Macron’s office, the two leaders will then discuss through a video conference with Merkel.

Negotiations take place in recent weeks as Ukraine and the West have warned about the concentration of troops along the Russian border. This is an accumulation that the United States and NATO have stated to be the largest since 2014.

In an interview with the French newspaper Le Figaro, Zelensky said, “It’s time to stop talking and make a decision.”

He said Friday’s talks were specifically aimed at discussing security issues. “Europe’s security depends on Ukraine’s security,” he said, adding that his country is seeking support from the European Union and the NATO alliance.

“Our goal is … to ease tensions,” a French official of the President of France said on condition of anonymity prior to the meeting.

“All the work we do is to support Ukraine’s sovereignty,” officials said.

More than 14,000 people were killed in a seven-year battle between Ukrainian troops and Russian-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine, which erupted after Russia annexed Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula in 2014. Efforts to reach a political solution have been stalled, and volatile ceasefire violations have become more and more frequent in recent weeks throughout the eastern industrial center of Ukraine, known as Donbas.

After Mr Zelensky chaired the Security Council of Ukraine, discussions in Paris were important to prepare for so-called “Normandy-style” talks involving leaders of Ukraine, Russia, France and Germany. Said there is.

The final meeting in Paris in December 2019 helped ease tensions, but made no progress on the political solution.
