Texas Longhorns face dangerous Pennsylvania State for berth in Sweet 16

Des Moines, Iowa (KXAN) — The Texas men’s basketball team NCAA Tournament Opening Round Showdownt, 81-61 win over Colgate.

The No. 2-seeded Longhorns are one win away from reaching the second weekend for the first time since 2008.

Making Sweet 16 is a significant feat for Texas. Because the last five times Texas has reached March his Madness, the Longhorns have fallen in the first or second round.

“It’s going to be a surreal moment,” Longhorns senior forward Timmy Allen said of the prospect of reaching the Sweet 16. We came here with a plan. “

Reaching the long-awaited second weekend won’t be easy as they’ll have to face one of the hottest teams in the country, Penn State. The Nittany Lions appeared to be fighting even to qualify for the tournament before robbing him of his five-game winning streak en route to his game at the Big Ten Championship.

In their first-round matchup, 10th-seeded Penn State beat Texas A&M 76-59. A largely balanced offense, the Nittany Lions are led by senior Jalen Pickett. Texas, the team’s leader in points, rebounds, assists and steals, will have to find a way to slow the pace of the pickets.

“I think he’s a great player,” Allen said. “We’ve analyzed some of his movies. He’s a guy who can take a lot of buckets on his own, rebound the ball, pass the ball. That’s what I admire.”

Longhorns like Allen and Brock Cunningham know what it’s like to be in a tournament in Texas. Freshmen and transfer students alike were new to the experience, but quickly realized the expectations that came with the territory.

“Honestly, I wasn’t very excited about last night,” Longhorns alumni transfer guard Jabari Rice said of the victory over Colgate. I would have been really excited if I was in , because that’s my goal is to win one tournament, but I think I have bigger goals than that.”

The Longhorns know the task at hand is tough, but it goes both ways. Texas has some good basketball. Their coach said it was their best play of the season so far.

Longhorns interim head coach Rodney Terry said, “They’ve been really hard and unselfish as a team. “They really connect. I’m really proud of this group.”

Despite Penn State’s recent dominant effort, the Longhorns still enter Saturday’s showdown as the 5.5-point favorites, according to the FanDuel Sportsbook. The Nittany Lions and Longhorns are scheduled to fall at 6:45 p.m. Saturday evening in Des Moines.
