U.S. lawmakers plan to visit Taiwan to meet senior leaders

Taipei – The de facto embassy, the American Institute in Taiwan, said on Friday that five US lawmakers were in Taiwan on a surprise one-day visit.

Members of the US House of Representatives will arrive in Taiwan on Thursday night to meet with senior leaders on the island. No details were provided about their itinerary.

The visit comes as tensions between Taiwan and China have risen to their highest levels in decades. Taiwan has had autonomy since the split between the two countries in the 1949 civil war, but China considers the island part of its territory.

South Carolina Republican representative Nancy Mace tweeted Thursday night, using the island’s unofficial name, “just landed in the Republic of Taiwan.”

Representatives Mark Takano, D-California, Elissa Slotkin, D-Michigan, Colin Allred, D-Texas, Sara Jacobs, D-Caliph. And Mace are all part of the delegation.

The trip takes place just a few weeks after a group of six Republican lawmakers visit the island. A delegation of the parliament met, among other things, with President Tsai Ing-wen, National Security Secretary Wellington Koo, and Foreign Minister Joseph Wu.

This is the third visit by a US lawmaker. In June, when the island was struggling to get enough, three MPs flew to Taiwan to donate a badly needed vaccine.

The Biden administration also invited Taiwan to the Democracy Summit next month. This is a move that has led to intense criticism from China.

Zhao Lijian, a spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, said on Wednesday, “What the United States has done is that so-called democracy pursues geopolitical goals, oppresses other countries, divides the world, serves its own interests, and serves the world. Hegemony. “
