Vilnius (Reuters) -The United States is concerned about the influx of Middle Eastern and African immigrants from Belarus to Lithuania, US diplomats said.
Lithuania began construction of a 550 km (320 miles) razor wire barrier on the border with Belarus on Friday after accusing Belarusian authorities of illegally sending foreign migrants to the European Union.
In an interview with Lithuanian news website 15min.lt released on Sunday, US Assistant Secretary of State George Kent said, “We are very careful and concerned about it.”
He said “pressure tactics” were comparable to the 2015 flow of immigrants from Russia to Finland and Norway.
“It’s what we call on the Belarusian authorities to stop-intentionally pushing immigrants from other countries to the Lithuanian border,” Kent said.
