A Mercy Flight air ambulance helicopter crashed in New York State on Tuesday evening, killing two people on board, police said.
The accident happened at around 1pm in the town of Elba, located in a rural area between Buffalo and Rochester, as reported at the scene of the Troopers accident in New York State.
“We don’t know at this time why the helicopter crashed,” General Eugene Staniszewski said at an afternoon press conference near Edgerton and Norton Road.
The flight was believed to have taken place at Mercy Flight’s Batavia airfield 3.5 miles away and was believed to be on a training mission, the soldier said. He was reportedly hitting power lines as he was coming down.
Photographs taken shortly after the crash show the damaged plane was moving away from Norton Road. Smoke is seen from the downed plane, from a Bell 429 helicopter, while the first responders are filling the area.
The identities of the two victims were not clarified.
Staniszewski said officers did not know where the Mercy helicopter flight plan marked or the air ambulance was headed when the accident occurred.
