Toyota builds $ 1.29 billion US battery plant to employ 1,750 units

Detroit – Toyota plans to build a new $ 1.29 billion plant in the United States to manufacture batteries for gas-electric hybrid and fully electric vehicles.

The location of the plant has not been announced, but the company has announced that it will eventually employ 1,750 people, begin manufacturing batteries in 2025, and gradually expand to 2031.

The plant is part of Toyota’s $ 3.4 billion plan to spend on automotive batteries in the United States over the next decade. It doesn’t elaborate where the remaining $ 2.1 billion will be spent, but some could be spent on another battery factory.

It happens in the midst of a flood of global announcements about boosting the production of batteries for electric vehicles. Most automakers are working on the transition from internal combustion engines to zero-emission battery vehicles.

Stellantis (formerly Fiat Chrysler) and LG Energy Solutions said Monday that they plan to build a battery manufacturing facility to help automakers get 40% of US sales from electric vehicles by 2030.

Also on Monday, Foxconn Technology Group, a Taiwanese company that manufactures smartphones such as Apple, announced that it will produce electric vehicles and buses for auto brands in China, North America, Europe and other markets.

Ford Motor Company also announced that it will transform its transmission plant in northwest England into a plant that manufactures power units for automobiles and trucks sold throughout Europe.

Ford, General Motors and Toyota have announced a major investment in a US battery plant. GM plans to build battery factories in Ohio and Tennessee, and Ford plans to build factories in Tennessee and Kentucky.

Toyota will establish a new company to operate a new battery plant in the United States with Toyota Tsusho, a subsidiary that currently manufactures a series of parts for automobile manufacturers. Toyota will also help Toyota expand its US supply chain and increase its knowledge of lithium-ion car batteries, Toyota said Monday.

Toyota’s CEO in North America, Ted Ogawa, said in a statement, “Today’s commitment to electrification is to achieve long-term sustainability for the environment, US employment and consumers. That’s it. ”

The new plant may be near the company’s US assembly plant in Missouri, Kentucky, Indiana, Alabama, or Texas.

Toyota plans to sell 2 million zero-emission hydrogen and battery electric vehicles annually worldwide by 2030. In the United States, Toyota plans to sell at least 1.5 to 1.8 million partially electrified vehicles by 2030.

The United States now offers hydrogen vehicles, hybrids, and plug-in hybrids that can travel relatively short distances on electricity before switching to a gas-electric hybrid powertrain. Toyota says at least partially electric-powered vehicles currently account for about a quarter of U.S. sales and plan to rise to nearly 70% by 2030. ..
