Titan’s Tannehill says he won’t be mentoring rookie Malik Willis

Tannehill said he would not mentor new Titans rookie quarterback Malik Willis, which sparked a debate over the attitudes of veteran QBs dealing with new substitutes.

NASHVILLE, Tennessee – The Tennessee Titans selected Liberty quarterback Malik Willis with his pick in the third round of last weekend’s 2022 NFL Draft. And it looks like he doesn’t have a slightly difficult start with current Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill.

Tannehill, 33, has been a starter in Tennessee for the past three seasons. Obviously, the Titans didn’t choose Willis to take on Tannehill’s job (immediately), but when asked on Tuesday about the new addition and what he would do to help, Tannehill said it wasn’t his oriental job.

“I don’t think it’s my job to orient it, but if you learn from me along the way, that’s a great thing,” Tannehill said.

I don’t know exactly if we can call Tannehill’s bitterness, but it’s certainly not the first time a starting quarterback has had that kind of attitude about a new rookie quarterback, which looks like the future of the team.

Although Willis was not a first-round pick, the Titans made it to the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft. Of course, Willis was expected to be in the first round, and even spent months projected as one of the top 10.

Two-time NFL MVP and Super Bowl champion Kurt Warner didn’t like what Tannehill had to say about Willis.

“I’ll never understand the mentality of ‘I’m not here to guide the next guy’ … so for all the young QBs who need a mentor, send me a DM and I’ll be that guy, happy to help in any way I can!” Warner tweeted on Tuesday.

Locked On Titans podcast presenter Tyler Rowland was also not a fan of what Tannehill had to say.

“I know a lot of you guys are not going to like this opinion, but this is a terrible leadership of Ryan Tannehill,” said Tyler Rowland, podcast presenter for Locked On Titans. “That’s my general philosophy, to give back. Pay it forward. Once upon a time, when Ryan Tannehill was a new QB, there were several people who took him under his protection and showed him the right way to do things.”

“At 34, if you’re targeting Malik Willis, are you afraid he’ll take your job if you advise him? That’s what Favre said, Joe Flacco said things like that. Tom Brady said things like that.” Rowland continued. . “Just because a lot of people have said the wrong thing doesn’t make Tannehill right. At the end of the day, Tannehill’s job is to not only guide Willis, but all the players on the team.”

While Rowland doesn’t expect any real animosity from Tannehill towards Willis, he sadly doesn’t understand why there wouldn’t be a desire to help the rookie get to his feet in the NFL.

“I think Ryan Tannehill is going to avoid Willis, treat him horribly and be petty? No,” Rowland said. “But this is proof that Ryan Tannehill is not going to do any harm to a new rookie navigating the NFL.”
