Tips on how to make the most of gas mileage as prices reach record highs in San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio reached a record high on Friday for the price of regular gasoline, with drivers paying an average of $ 3.99 per gallon.

“We saw another three-cent jump in one night’s average in San Antonio, which is now the highest point so far,” said Daniel Armbruster, a spokesman for AAA Texas.

According to AAA Texas, this current price surpassed the record of July 2008, when gas reached $ 3.96 per gallon in San Antonio.

But there are several ways to stretch your dollar for gas. Armbruster said that a bad habit that many drivers have is something called a rabbit.

“Jackrabbit starts can reduce fuel consumption by about 40 percent, especially if you’re on a stop and drive,” Armbruster said. by speeding up too fast. “

Another way to reduce fuel economy is to avoid idling or overheating your car, especially in newer car models.

“The car’s engine consumes a quarter to a half gallon of fuel per hour when idling, but a warmed-up engine only takes about 10 seconds to refuel,” Armbruster said. “When it’s safe to do so, you can turn off your engine if you’re stuck for more than a minute, and then just turn it on again.”

Another simple tip is to drive a little slower. “Reducing highway speeds by just five to ten miles per hour can increase fuel consumption by seven to 14 percent,” Armbruster said.

There are steps you can take to save gas even before you get in your car. Make sure your tires are well inflated. Tires lose about 1 PSI each month. The presence of tires with lower pressure than recommended by the manufacturer can affect fuel economy.

Drivers can also get a discount on petrol when they sign up for membership in wholesalers such as Costco and Sam’s Club. There are membership fees, but they are often offset by the amount you will eventually save.

According to Consumer Reports, if a normal driver pays 20 cents less for gasoline for an entire year, he will save more than $ 100, which makes the membership fee.

Armbruster added that driving in search of the lowest gasoline prices could be a waste of time and money.

About 75 percent of drivers choose the gas station they are familiar with, regardless of the price. This is convenient. It’s on the route. You can download apps like the AAA mobile app, which is free, and then find the cheapest gas near you this way, “Armbruster said.

There may be more price jumps in the coming days, but Armbruster says changing driver behavior is the biggest factor in stretching the throttle.

“Last week we saw some really big daily jumps of 20, 25 cents in some areas and we saw such cooling in the last 24 hours. But that doesn’t mean it’s over, “Armbruster said. “If you want to save on fuel, change your behavior and also keep your car maintained, because if you start your car, you will pay the costs elsewhere.”
