The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified a passenger who died after the vehicle left the IH-35 and landed in the street.

The woman has been identified as 33-year-old Amber Ponce.

Ponce’s death was classified as a homicide, due to a cervical spine injury.

A woman died and a man was hospitalized after a car crashed near downtown early Thursday morning, according to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office.

The accident occurred at approximately 2:30 am near the Julio Street ramp on Interstate 35 South.

Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said a lieutenant was trying to stop the car after spotting it traveling about 40 mph on the freeway. At that point, the driver began to pull over, Salazar said, but instead slowed down.

The sheriff said the deputy sheriff was trying to use the radio in pursuit when the crash occurred.

The black Mustang crossed over the concrete barrier at the end of the highway, near the Julio/Cesar Chavez ramp, and landed on the street near the fire station. Salazar said a female passenger in the car died.

The driver, a 19-year-old man, was taken to a local hospital. The charges he faces now are unknown. The sheriff said the man also had several outstanding warrants.

BCSO says there was a crash some time ago in the same location with similar results, so it’s unclear if the damage to the highway wall was due to the current crash. As the car swerved off the highway, Salazar said it hit a memorial set up for the previous crash.
