This Texas Hill Country program tries to help everyone enjoy the great outdoors

SAN ANTONIO – There is a special program in the Texas Hill Country that aims to ensure that everyone can enjoy the great outdoors.

The program is called the Children’s Association for Maximum Potential – or CAMP.

All CAMP programs are deliberately designed for people with illnesses or disabilities.

“Archery… Even though I really don’t have a straight shot, I just love how exciting it is,” said Caelan Talavera.

Caelan, 22, survived a brain tumor and has attended CAMP five times.

“One of the things that happens to a lot of people who have undergone treatment is that just because the treatment has ended doesn’t mean there aren’t lasting effects,” said Dr. Brandon G. Briery, Executive Camp Director.

Briery, who has been with Camp CAMP for 15 years.

“That’s one thing that makes CAMP unique in a way. CAMP is also aimed at adults who are still dealing with the consequences of an illness or treatment they have had or a disability they have. Even when they are adults, they still have a place in the CAMP. Your needs and challenges do not go away. And we think CAMP shouldn’t go away either,” Briery said.

CAMP offers leisure opportunities for people with illnesses or disabilities and their siblings.

“While meeting all these new friends, they also get a chance to do things they can’t do anywhere else, like ride a horse or swim in a canoe or swim in a pool,” Briery said.

At the moment, CAMP sees hundreds and hundreds of campers every year.

“The need in our community is great. We know that there are thousands of people with disabilities and medical conditions living in the greater San Antonio area,” Briery said.

The concept is that everyone, regardless of health or disability, deserves the opportunity to be a party to a community where they are celebrated, a place where their independence and confidence can grow.

“CAMP gives them the opportunity to come and be with their peers, to meet people who are going through similar challenges in life and who get it,” Briery said.

CAMP is always looking for expansion and needs more and more volunteers. If you are interested in helping, you can do so by clicking here.
