Theranos employees challenged the test claims in a presentation Elizabeth Holmes created for Rupert Murdoch.

A senior project manager at the collapsed blood test company Theranos claims to a California court that his boss Elizabeth Holmes knew wasn’t true to potential investors and customers, including Rupert Murdoch and the U.S. military. He said he did.

Daniel Edlin worked for Theranos from 2011 to 2016.

Holmes said he had been warned by the company’s in-house lawyer about claiming the effectiveness of blood testing technology to investors, but ignored the warning.

Prosecutor John Bostic showed investors and clients the Theranos 2011 and 2012 PowerPoint jury slides. This was created while Edrin was working there.

Edrin told the jury that he was working on a team that created PowerPoint and was approved by Holmes before being presented to the military.

The U.S. military was impressed and signed a 12-month service contract with Theranos in 2012.

Edrin said the phrase in the presentation was similar to that used in the binders given to future investors, including Rupert Murdoch.

Elizabeth Holmes, the founder of Theranos, can be seen arriving in court in San Jose on October 12. The trial begins on September 8 and is expected to continue for several more weeks.

The media mogul invested $ 125 million in Theranos, but lost his cash after the failure was first published by The Wall Street Journal, one of Murdoch’s publications.

In an email from January 2015, Holmes wrote to Murdoch: We are very much looking forward to the opportunity to continue our conversation one day, including a more detailed conversation about China.

“I am honored to be part of our company.”

Murdoch replied:’Thanks to Elizabeth. I enjoyed it every minute. Is there a blood result? See you, Rupert. ”

The next day, Theranos scientists emailed Murdoch’s blood test results to Edlin and Daniel Young, Vice President of Theranos.

“CO2 runs much faster than usual, so it’s a bit expensive … what do you want to do with it?” The scientist wrote in an email.

“Since it was a short draw, there are no rerun samples.”

Edrin testified that he could not rerun the test because he did not draw enough blood from Murdoch.

Murdoch is on the list of government witnesses who may be summoned during the trial.

Edrin began testifying to his former boss, Theranos founder Holmes, on Friday and continued to stand this week. She faces 12 fraudulent investors and faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

In the presentation, he claimed that Theranos blood testing equipment, called the minilab, could perform “all the tests available in the central lab.”

They said they needed only one drop of blood, “1/1,000 the size of a typical blood draw.”

However, internally, this claim was known to be suspicious.

Theranos spokesman Jeffrey Blickman and in-house lawyer Kate Beardsley reported in a draft of Theranos’ website that they may be exaggerating the company’s technology capabilities.

Beardsley should replace “remove all tests” with “multiple or more” in the 4-page email. “From a logistics perspective, it is very unlikely that the lab will be able to perform all possible tests. [federal] Certification specifies a specific area of expertise in the tests performed by the lab.

She also questioned phrases such as “highest quality,” “unmatched precision,” and “highest level of precision,” and Theranos said, “It will bring results to you and your doctor faster than before.” I asked my colleague how I could substantiate my claim.

Holmes replied in an email: “As we have discussed many times, we should not use the phrase” unmatched in accuracy. ” “

Still, many of the complaints were the final presentations offered to investors and clients.

Evidence presented to the jury on Tuesday never revealed that Theranos was using a modified non-Theranos device to run the test.

Edrin took a pragmatic approach, telling the jury that Holmes was “very involved and focused on details” in approving Theranos marketing materials.

“All of this document has been reviewed and approved by Elizabeth,” Edrin said of a presentation to the military.

“She was very involved. The substantive communication I had with the army was either discussed with her at the time or sent to her.

Theranos was collapsed after its 2015 publication in The Wall Street Journal by journalist John Carreyrou.

The case will resume on Friday.
