The woman, who had to undergo a hysterectomy after being diagnosed with cervical cancer, praised her “selfless” best friend who intervened as a surrogate mother.

Originally from Atlanta, Jessica Thomas froze the eggs after cancer treatment, but couldn’t find a suitable surrogate until May 2019, when her 15-year-old friend Liz Gensheimer intervened.

Jessica, now 33, and her husband, Michael, 43, who is the band director, welcomed their 9-pound son Brussels to the world on November 10.

She states: “We were looking for a baby for almost a year, so when I went to a health checkup in December 2017 I was devastated.

“I didn’t expect them to find anything, but there was a visible tumor in my cervix.

“My only option was total hysterectomy, as it was 3 cm in size and meant that radiation therapy would not work.

“Most of my chances of having a biological child have been taken away from me.

“We were in grief, and our family and friends were in grief.

“Liz was one of the first people I spoke to. She was very sad and offered us help, but she was looking for a second baby.”

Since meeting at college at the age of 18, women have been close friends.

They belonged to the same marching band, had sorority, and went on their honeymoon together in Saint Lucia.

Liz, 33, said: “I was overwhelmed by Jessica when she was found to be her surrogate mother when she mentioned hysterectomy.

“At that time I didn’t push it. I know she was considering going through an agency and wanted everything to go much faster.

Jessica and her husband started the IVF process in January, freezing eight embryos.

Her reproductive organs were removed, but she was able to keep her ovaries.

Thankfully, the cancer did not spread and Jessica was completely cleared.

Jessica and Michael said they failed to “click” with other potential agents and failed to meet other financial needs.

She said:’I had never thought about in vitro fertilization or surrogacy, so I had a lot of adoption in such a short period of time.

Within ‘2 months, the embryos were frozen prior to the February surgery.

“I was relieved that my cancer was gone, but it was very difficult to understand what I had experienced.”

The couple started searching for surrogate mothers in April 2019, but a year later-they had no luck.

They failed the potential “click” and failed to meet other financial needs.

Jessica said: “This process has hit our mental health because it was much more difficult than we could imagine.

“We had a lot of people offer, but when it came to money they couldn’t handle the offensive conversation.

“Until one day, Liz sat us at breakfast and said,” When I gave birth, I gave birth to your baby. ” “

She was faithful to her words and started IVF for a couple just a month after giving birth in April 2019.

Jessica said:’I couldn’t imagine a journey through someone else.

“We have experienced so much together that I felt much more vulnerable and able to be closer to each other.”

Liz had a smooth pregnancy, but Jessica was afraid she couldn't bond with her baby because she barely felt her son kick because of the coronavirus.

Liz describes the experience as super “rewarding” and acknowledges the “protective” feelings towards the little Ollie.

She said:’It was especially difficult because we were separated because of the pandemic.

“We took a walk with each other, but couldn’t feel the baby kicking.

“Liz was great and sending photos and videos and calling for updates always made me feel involved.”

She states: “Birth was surreal, as half of the nine months we didn’t even believe we were parents because the bumps didn’t exist.

“Liz is a rock star and confirmed that Ollie was handed over to me directly.

“The first thing I noticed was his size, which made Liz feel pretty sick.

She added that a family of three was immediately connected

Jessica said Ollie was handed over to her shortly after birth and the family of three was soon connected.

“He also had gorgeous curly hair. Our first hug was special and I fell in love with him immediately.

“We connected immediately, and he looks very much like me, but looks like his dad!”

Liz describes the experience as super “rewarding” and acknowledges the “protective” feelings towards the little Ollie.

She said:’I saw them and think,’I helped bring that life here.’

“They are doing great things as parents and I know Ollie is thriving.

“I think it’s very strange, but I love him more than just a” nephew. “

“His parents fought and gave him a lot to welcome him. I hope he always knows how special and loved he is.”
