BROOKLINE, Mass. – The latest at the US Open (all local time):
8 in the morning
The U.S. Open is open until the weekend at the Country Club, not just at the top.
Collin Morikawa and Joel Dahmen are tied at 5 below par and will not play until 3:45 p.m. Dahmen has never won the PGA Tour and jokingly says he is used to being home at 5pm for dinner.
The cut was 3 out of 143. That means only eight shots separate the leaders from last place with 36 holes to go. Such a small margin has only occurred once in the last decade at the US Open. That was in 2017 in Erin Hills, which was not the stern test that was Brookline.
Erin Hills, Wisconsin, is where a record seven players finished the US Open with 10 less or better. Country Club is expected to be firm and fast, and big numbers are easy to find.
Among the players who reduced the number is Patrick Cantlay, the player of the year on the PGA Tour. Jordan Spieth was a better one. He gets seven shots from behind.
