Texas high school student beats Michael Phelps’ swimming record

AUSTIN (KXAN) — High School Student at Keller ISD broke the 400m individual medley record Formerly set by Olympian Michael Phelps.

Maximus Williamson, a sophomore at Keller High School near Fort Worth, competed at the 2022 Winter Junior Nationals in Austin on December 9th. According to the release, Williamson competed in the 400-meter individual medley in the national age group from age 15 to age 16.

Williamson completed the race in 3:39.83, beating the 2002 record set by Phelps of 3:42:08.

“Breaking 40 [seconds] It was a goal for me,” Williamson said in a release. “Last year, I was very close to that…I think that’s what pushed me the most.”

The swimming namesake Phelps is also recognized as the most medal-winning Olympian of all time. In total he has won his 28 medals, 23 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze.

Williamson broke the record while swimming at the Lakeside Aquatic Club. In addition to competing with his club, he also competed on the Keller High School swim team, winning several medals and setting multiple records.

“Michael Phelps is one of the most famous swimmers of all time,” said Keller High School swim coach Jamie Schultz. “Even if you don’t swim, you know him.” Breaking is truly an extraordinary achievement.”
