The United States announces further sanctions against Myanmar’s army

The US government announced on Friday sanctions against five people and five members of Myanmar’s army.

Those punished include a military unit, arms dealers, military commanders and companies and individuals working in the defense.

“As we approach one year from the horrific violence perpetrated by the Burmese military on the day of the war in 2021, in which more than 100 people were killed, the United States is imposing sanctions on five Burmese individuals and five individuals in response to brutal military action. against the people of Burma, “said US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in a statement.

“Since the February 2021 coup, the military government has only intensified its violence and killed more than 1,700 people, including women, children and aid workers,” he added.

Those subject to sanctions will have limited or restricted access to property in the United States. U.S. companies will also be banned from doing business with those who are being punished.

The move comes after the United States announced that the Myanmar government had treated a Rohingya Muslim minority as a genocide earlier this week.

Myanmar’s government has already imposed sanctions on the United States and other countries for treating Rohingya Muslims as well as for the February 2021 military coup.
