Last year, 42% of US new electricity generation capacity came from onshore wind energy, more than any other source, according to figures in a series of reports from the Department of Energy (DOE) this week. In contrast, solar was only 38% of the new capacity last year.

It measures capacity, which is the maximum amount of power that can be produced under ideal conditions, but the actual energy production can be much less than that ideal as the wind changes.

Onshore wind is currently a powerful intermittent energy source throughout the United States, although wind capacity and power generation vary by region. A study by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory at DOE has recorded 16,836 MW of new utility-scale onshore wind. Power capacity was added to the US energy infrastructure in 2020. That’s about $ 24.6 billion in investment in new wind power.

Last year, DOE said wind energy was able to provide more than half of the state’s electricity generation and sales in some states. Iowa led the pack in wind power, which provides 57% of the state’s electricity generation. However, Iowa has a lot of wind turbines and the population is not very large.

More commonly, wind power is used to generate electricity for the electricity industry in the fall and spring nights, and in the winter season. (Along the Gulf Coast of Texas, wind energy appears late in the afternoon or in the evening in summer.)

Last year’s growth in onshore wind energy in the United States was partially driven by production tax credits ready for phasing out, encouraging development before the event horizon.

Improvements in wind technology have also helped drive onshore wind development. Compared to older wind turbines, the latest models feature taller towers with longer blades that can generate more energy by reaching higher winds.

In addition to onshore wind farms, countless offshore wind developments are underway in the country.But last year, offshore wind farms weren’t yet in operation in most of the United States.

DOE’s 2021 Offshore Wind Market Report instead focuses on the “pipeline” of offshore initiatives. In 2020, the offshore pipeline “grown to a potential generation capacity of 35,324 megawatts (MW),” the report said.

The Block Island Wind Farm off Rhode Island and the Virginia Coast Offshore Wind Pilot Project (off Virginia Beach) are the first two offshore wind farms to operate in the United States. Another project, Vineyard Wind 1, Nantucket, South Massachusetts, has received all permits and has a contract to sell electricity and supply it to the grid.

The pipeline has 15 other offshore wind projects that have reached the permit stage, and there are 7 wind energy areas that can be leased at the discretion of the federal government in the future, the DOE report said.

The Biden administration wants to expand its offshore wind capacity to 30 gigawatts by 2030 as part of its goal of achieving a carbon-free electricity sector by 2035.

In addition to all forms of wind power, other forms of clean energy are needed to meet US electricity demand while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
