Russia’s war against Ukraine will show technology companies why national security is important and why they should help maintain it, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt told CNBC’s Power Lunch on Monday.

“The war will help strengthen technology companies’ understanding of why national security is important,” Schmidt said.

If you falsely believe that 10 years ago the war was eliminated, the conflict was eliminated, we do not need the military, etc. about it. And I think we unfortunately put that argument horribly to bed. We need strong national security in our country, and the technology industry must support that. “

Schmidt has long been a supporter of the US national security establishment – for example, in 2016 he took on the role of technical adviser to the Pentagon, according to Reuters. But employees of technology companies, including Google, have sometimes protested against technology companies ’contracts with federal defense contractors. For example, in 2018, after employee protests, Google told them it would not extend the Pentagon’s contract to analyze video from drones with artificial intelligence.

In the last few weeks since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, technology companies have taken steps to prevent their platforms from turning into vessels for Kremlin propaganda. Meta’s Facebook marked government outlets as such and refused to suspend the practice, leaving the service restricted by the government. Meta later allowed users to call for the “death of Russian invaders”, prompting the Russian government to launch a criminal investigation into the campaign.

Schmidt said the restrictions on Russia from the West essentially “bring Moscow back to where it was in the 1980s, through food stamps, long queues and the like.”

But when it comes to technology, he said: “I think together we better keep them integrated with information for Russian citizens so they can see what they are losing.”

Schmidt was Google’s CEO from 2001 to 2011 and held other positions, including executive chairman, before reportedly leaving the company altogether in 2020.
