India has reported a record number of cases of coronavirus for the fifth consecutive day, and a second wave is putting its health care system at stake.

Approximately 352,991 new cases of Covid-19 have been reported in the last 24 hours, with more than 17 million infections in India and 5 million in April alone. Official figures are conservative, according to media reports, but at least 2,182 people have died from the virus in the last 24 hours, with more than 195,000 deaths in South Asian countries.

Prior to the second wave, India reported an average of about 10,000 new coronavirus cases per day. The government has been criticized for allowing religious festivals and election rallies this year.

Indian hospitals are short of beds and extremely lacking oxygen to treat patients.
