The New York Yankees make serious play for Shohei Ohtani

It New York Yankees are in the midst of a historic season, with pace to 108 wins and the American East League title.

But that doesn’t seem to stop the Bronx Bombers from trying to improve, as they made a “serious” bid to the Los Angeles Angels for superstar Shohei Ohtani, the New York Post reports.

Angels, mired in fourth place in AL West at 43-59, are reported to have considered a bid for Ohtani, a rare two-way player who dominates on the mound (9-6, 2.83 ERA) and on the plate (0.255 average with 22 homers). ). The San Diego Padres and Chicago White Sox also made offers for Ohtani, but the Angels have decided to keep their star, the Post reports.

The report did not specify what the Yankees had to offer Ohtani. New York is looking for other avenues to improve the club, asking about Juan Soto of the Washington Nationals and Frankie Montas of Oakland A’s, the Post reported.

Montas is 4-9 with an ERA of 3.18 and is considered one of the top pitchers in the market, while Soto is the top prize of the trade deadline. He hit .243 with 23 homers and was under the club’s control for two more seasons.

The Yankees (69-34) currently lead AL East by 11.5 games, although they are not far ahead of the Houston Astros (67-36) in the race for the best record in the Americas League.

MLB trading deadline is 6pm ET on Tuesday.
