The mystery of a child found covered in blood has been unraveled, tragically, after it was revealed that both his parents had died in the Highland Park massacre.
Two-year-old Aiden was found under his father, Kevin McCarthy, 37, his wife Irina, 35, and was killed along with five others in a July 4 mass shooting, authorities have confirmed.
The child was separated from his parents because he was rescued by another couple during the chaos.
Lauren Silva, 38, said she and her boyfriend got out of a parking lot after hearing gunshots at the Independence Day parade.
They had both just had breakfast when the sounds stopped.
“We were opening the door to climb the stairs and we heard … bum, bum, bum, bum, bum,” Silva told the Daily Beast.
“And someone seemed to be knocking on the glass door.”
Silva and her boyfriend Robert E Crimo were near the alleged killer when he was shot on a roof, killing at least seven people and injuring more than 25.
“I didn’t even hear a scream, it was a horrible silence,” Silva said.
She and her boyfriend responded to the violence and ran to help the victims.
“My boyfriend gave me this boy and they shot him in the leg and he said he was under this dad,” Silva told the Beast.
“As they were trying to stop the bleeding, I took the boy down to the garage.”
Silva ran to the basement of the garage to care for the missing child with another family, who was later named Aiden.
“She kept wondering if mom and dad would be back soon,” Silva said.
They stayed in the garage for 20 minutes before the two connected with their boyfriend, Silva said.
The child was reunited with his grandparents after another couple took him to the fire department, CBS News reported.
Dan and Greg Ring said they caught the uninjured child before trying to find the parents.
“And I saw the scene,” Greg said.
“The massacre,” Dana said.
They decided to take him to the fire department, where a Highland Police detective took Aiden to his grandparents.
A GoFundMe has started to raise funds for orphans.
“On behalf of his family, and with their permission, I am setting up this fundraiser to help him and her caregivers grow, care for and care for (the baby) to embark on this unexpected journey for him and his support system,” the organizer wrote.
Robert E Crimo was arrested eight hours after the shooting.
Officials believe he used an AR-15-style weapon from a rooftop parade on July 4.
Crimo now faces seven charges of first-degree murder, said Illinois State Attorney Eric Rinehart.
Rinehart said he anticipates more charges when Crimo appears before the court.
