UVALDE, Texas – The family of the husband of a teacher killed in an attack on a Uvalde school has died of a heart attack.

Joe, 48, of Guadalupe, was the husband of Garcia Irma Garcia. He was one of 21 people killed in a shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde.

KENS 5 photographer captured the moment when Garcia visited the cross in memory of the victims of the shooting on Thursday morning. It is unknown how long after the video he had a heart attack.

According to the school profile, Irma taught at the school for 23 years. In 2019, he was one of 19 San Antonio area teachers recognized as a finalist for the Trinity University Award for Excellence in Teaching.

The couple had four children. Joe loved to barbecue with Irma and listen to music. At first, their nephew said that he had died “by fate”.

On Tuesday, Joe and Irma’s nephew, John Martinez, described the family as a nightmare and said they were still reconciled to losing Irman.

Joe said he was a family man who would do anything for his four children.

The family said Irma’s body was found next to another student protecting the child killed in the shooting.

Martinez said his Tia Irma died heroically while protecting his students from the fire.

At this point, Martinez asks the community to keep the family in prayer, because they are now grieving the loss of two loved ones.

Garcia’s family says they believe Joe Garcia really died of a broken heart.
