The Great Salt Lake water level drops to historic lows

Salt Lake City – The water level in the Great Salt Lake has reached historic lows. This is a tough milestone for the largest natural lake west of the Mississippi River as megadroughts hit the area.

On Saturday, the United States Geological Survey announced that it was about an inch below the previous record of 4,191.4 feet (1,278 meters) set in 1963.

Candice Hasenjager, deputy director of the Utah Department of Water Resources, said new records are coming months earlier than lakes usually reach their lowest levels of the year, and water levels could continue to drop further. It shows that.

The retreating water is already affecting the pelican nesting sites among the millions of birds that depend on the lake. The yacht is pulled out of the water to prevent it from getting caught in the mud. Exposing the drier bottom of the lake can send arsenic-contaminated dust into the air that millions of people breathe.

For years, people have been watering crops from rivers that flow into lakes and diverting water to water their homes. Due to the shallowness of the lake (about 35 feet (11 meters) at its deepest point), the coastline recedes as soon as water is low.

Most years, the Great Salt Lake increases up to 2 feet (0.5 meters) from the spring runoff. This year it was only 6 inches (15 cm).

Droughts are depleting western lakes and exacerbating large wildfires affecting California and Oregon. Republican Utah Governor Spencer Cox begged people to “pray for the rain” by reducing the watering of the lawn.

These extreme conditions are often due to a combination of anomalous random, short-term, and natural weather patterns enhanced by anthropogenic long-term climate change.

Scientists have long warned that the weather will be raging as the world warms. Due to climate change, the west has been much warmer and drier in the last three decades.
