The fire department used a deadly fire as a reminder of the importance of smoke detectors

SAN ANTONIO “The San Antonio Fire Department is issuing another reminder of the importance of working smoke detectors after another deadly fire.”

Firefighters found the latest victim early Tuesday morning at a home in block 100 of Rila Vista.

A neighbor told KSAT 12 News that she noticed the flames as she left for work around 4 am, after which she called 911.

When firefighters arrived, they found flames and smoke coming from the home, according to Woody Woodward, a public information officer for the SAFD.

“Unfortunately, while we were in the house, fighting the fire, we found a dead victim,” he said.

Woodward said the woman they described as an “adult” was found not far from the front door and may have been trying to escape at the time.

He said firefighters had not found any smoke detectors in the home, a warning system that could make a difference.

“It’s something, at least initially, that seems to be a preventable fire,” Woodward said.

He said investigators believe the dangerous setting in the bedroom was the cause of the fire.

“This fire appears to have originated from a wall-mounted air conditioner that was connected to a very long extension cord that had accumulated dangerously under the bed,” Woodward said.

Firefighters found two pets, a dog and a cat, who also died in the fire. Looks like another dog managed to escape.

Woodward said it was the 12th death in San Antonio since October and called on everyone to make it his last.

He said it was a good reminder for people to carry out security checks in their homes, doing things like making sure they have a clear road outside in case of an emergency and making sure their smoke detectors are working.
