THE ANGELS – The Los Angeles Dodgers put Clayton Kershaw on the injured list on Friday with inflammation in a pelvic joint.
The Dodgers made the move several hours before Kershaw (4-0, 1.80 effective) faced the Philadelphia Phillies at Dodger Stadium. Walker Buehler took his place on the field.
Dodgers coach Dave Roberts said Kershaw’s back was “locked up” during his home flight from Pittsburgh on Wednesday. Kershaw said he had an epidural injection to relieve the pain, but that he would not play catch-up for at least a few days.
“I think it’s going to be a brief stint at IL,” Roberts said. “Just looking at years before this one, going through this similar situation, getting an epidural and how your body responds to it.”
Kershaw, 34, has a great start to his 15th season with the Dodgers. The three-time National League Cy Young winner has 32 strikeouts and only three tickets in his five openings since signing a $ 17 million one-year deal in March to return to his only professional club.
Kershaw became the leader of the Dodgers franchise in punches on April 30, but spent some time on the injured list in each of the last seven seasons. Along with back pain that has intensified intermittently for years, he has been bothered by pain in his left arm throughout the second half of last season and missed the Dodgers playoffs.
“He came back here to give us a chance to win the World Series this year,” Roberts said. “So you have to deal with the workload. With your experience and intelligence you know when to push and when not, and now is not the time.”
Buehler (4-1, 1.96 effective) threw on Friday at halftime because the Dodgers had a day off since their last outing. He also has a great start to the season with 32 strikeouts and a WHIP of 1.06.
Roberts said Julio Urias will be promoted to start Saturday against Philadelphia. After that, the Dodgers ’initial pitching situation becomes complicated: as of Friday, Los Angeles has seven home games in six days, including a two-game Tuesday.
“With Walker going up in the rotation, with Julio going up, just thinking who’s going to supplant Clayton, we don’t know now,” Roberts said.
Los Angeles reminded left-hander Garrett Cleavinger to take the Kershaw roster spot, but injuries are causing a major upheaval in the Dodgers’ normally robust pitching staff this season.
Kershaw joins Dustin May (Tommy John surgery), David Price (COVID-19) and Andrew Heaney (left shoulder) as potential unavailable starters. Relievers Blake Treinen (right shoulder), Victor Gonzalez (left elbow), Mitch White (COVID-19), Caleb Ferguson (Tommy John) and Danny Duffy (left elbow) are also out.
Price is likely to return home against Arizona next week, but the former Cy Young winner will not be ready to pitch more than two innings. The Dodgers have two possible contenders for a starting spot on their 40-man roster: right-hander Andre Jackson, whose only major league action was in three major appearances last year, and right-hander Michael Grove, who never pitched above the Double . A.
Cleavinger returns for his third stint with the Dodgers after allowing a career-winning 1 2/3 innings in his previous three appearances with Los Angeles this season. The Dodgers acquired him from Philadelphia in a three-team exchange in December 2020.
