MIAMI – Broward County Democrat Commissioner Jared Moskowitz announced on Friday that he would run for the seat in the South Florida Congress vacated by Democratic MP Ted Deutsch.
Moskowitz was the first candidate to announce his intentions for Florida’s 22nd Congressional District, which includes parts of Broward and Palm Beach counties.
“In Congress, I will fight to ensure access to the ballot box, to protect Social Security and Medicare, to work for real weapons security measures, and to fight for the security and protection of the State of Israel,” Moskowitz said in a statement. “I also look forward to working closely with the White House on his Cancer Moonshot initiative to finally find a cure for the disease that has taken too many good people away from us, including my father.
Moskowitz’s father, Michael Moskowitz, was a prominent South Florida lawyer and fundraising Democrat. He died of pancreatic cancer in January.
Jared Moskowitz previously served at the Florida House, where he led the first successful initiative in decades to pass a bipartisan gun security bill in the Florida legislature. The legislation was sparked by the fatal shooting of 17 students and teachers at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in 2018. Moskowitz himself had attended the school years earlier.
Moskowitz continued to serve as director of the Florida Emergency Management Division under Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis. Moskowitz is leading the national response to the COVID-19 pandemic and several major hurricanes.
Deutsche said Monday it would not seek re-election in the fall after accepting an offer to serve as chief executive of the American Jewish Committee, a New York-based nonprofit. He has served in Congress since 2010.
The Florida House and Senate redraw the maps of the State Congress, a reorganization process once a decade after the federal census. While every proposal makes changes in the Deutsch region due to population changes, the new region must remain safely democratic.
