U.S. health officials confirmed the case of the monkeypox virus in Massachusetts on Wednesday night, the first to be reported nationwide this year.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Massachusetts health officials are investigating a case that was identified in a man who recently traveled to Canada.

The patient is hospitalized and in “good condition,” and officials are finding people who may have been in contact with him while he was infected, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health said. The department stressed that the lawsuit does not pose a risk to the public.

Monkeypox is a “rare but potentially serious viral disease” that begins with flu-like symptoms and swollen lymph nodes, according to Massachusetts officials. The infection eventually spreads to the body and face and usually lasts for two to four weeks.

The virus re-emerged in Nigeria in 2017 after four decades of unconfirmed cases, according to the CDC. Since then, 450 cases of monkey pox have been reported in Nigeria, and at least eight more internationally, the CDC said.

Last year, Texas and Maryland reported a case of people who had recently traveled to Nigeria, according to Massachusetts officials.

But more cases have surfaced worldwide in the past two weeks, including in Portugal, Spain and the United Kingdom, the CDC said. The federal agency said it was not clear whether the people in those countries were affected by the monkey auction, but noted that in some cases there were people who identified as men who had sex with men.

The CDC has asked clinicians to care for patients with rash-related diseases related to the monkey, regardless of their sexual orientation or whether they have traveled. People suspected of having the virus should be isolated in a negative pressure room – spaces used to isolate patients – and staff should be provided with adequate personal protection around them, according to the agency.

“Many of these global reports of monkey cases are occurring in sexual networks. However, health care providers should be vigilant about the rash that features monkey traits,” said Inger Damon, director of the CDC’s Division of Pathogens and Pathology. a statement.

“We urge the public to contact their healthcare provider if there is a new eruption and they are concerned about the monkey’s smallpox,” Damon added.

The CDC said the virus could spread through contact with body fluids, the pain of a person with a monkeypox, and shared elements infected with the virus. Monkeypox can also be spread through droplets in a nearby environment, such as the same house, the agency said.

Common household disinfectants can kill the monkeypox virus, the CDC added.
