“When the hunter found the human body and contacted the sheriff’s office, he was looking for a shortcut from one hunting area to another,” Penner told EastIdahoNews.com.

“Because there is no remaining sunlight and the terrain is steep, restoration work began on the morning of the 18th.”

Police identified the body as Jones when he found his wallet with his ID on the scene.

“That’s pretty wild, isn’t it?” Steve Penner, Sheriff of Lemhi County, told EastIdahoNews.com. “There is another bow hunter looking for a shortcut that he has come across for 53 years.”

Penner added that Jones was alone, but was near a hunter on the scene when he disappeared.

Jones’ search was initially initiated two days after his disappearance, and a search team of 70 people was used with the aircraft.

Work was suspended due to snow. The search resumed after footprints were found near Jones’s disappearing area, according to an Associated Press article on September 15, 1968.

However, the case was abandoned again and no further investigation efforts were reported. He was sentenced to death in 1970.
